Driving in Spain is generally very easy but you do need to be aware of certain travel requirements and basic information, particularly when driving. There tends to be little congestion on the roads but Major cities such as Barcelona require you to have your wits about you.

Documents you must carry in the vehicle

  • Driving licence
  • Passport
  • Green card (or insurance document) - we supply this for rentals
  • VE103 (or log book - photocopy is unacceptable) - we supply this for rentals
  • 'Letter of Authority' to rent the vehicle - we supply this for rentals
  • Rental Agreement - we supply this for rentals

What you must have in the vehicle

  • Spare wheel & tools to change it
  • Warning triangle
  • High Viz jack for every person traveling in the vehicle
  • If you wear glasses you should carry a spare pair (not compulsory)

Speed

  • 31 mph (50 km/h) - Built-up areas
  • 55 mph (90 km/h) - 2nd category roads
  • 62 mph (100 km/h) - 1st category roads
  • 74 mph (120 km/h) - Motorways
  • 49 mph (80 km/h) - Motorways & dual carriage ways in built up areas

Travelling with Children

  • Children under 12 and under 1.35m high must use a suitable restraint system
  • Children under 12 cannot travel in the front unless there is no back seat or the back seat already has other children in them under the age of 12. 
  • Children over 1.35m may use an adult seatbelt

Do's

  • You must use dipped headlights in tunnels.
  • If you wear glasses to drive, you should carry a spare pair.
  • Use snow chains (maximum speed 50km/h) in appropriate conditions – the police can stop you for not doing so. Winter is usually from November to March.
  • In one-way streets in some cities you must park on the side of the road with even house numbers on even days of the month, and on the uneven side on uneven days

Dont's

  • You must not use headphones and headsets (any device that is attached to the ear) when driving.
  • The legal limit, which also applies to cyclists, is 49 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood.
  • A lower limit of 29 milligrams applies to drivers with less than 2 years’ experience
  • You must deactivate the speed camera alert on sat navs or you could be slapped with an on the spot fine.
  • You must not use your horn in an urban area except in an emergency, but may flash your lights.
